Hallett Cove School continues to actively participate in the Regional Advanced Technology Project.  The main aim this year is to improve students’ experience in learning Science and Maths as well as their motivation and engagement.


Students across Years 6 to 11 are involved in innovative learning units such as 

•  Energy Efficiency and  Sustainability
•  Nanotechnology
•  IXL one-to-one Maths course

•  Introduction to, and use  of, various
   computer based programs.
•  Engineering  Construction
      with specific focus on Advanced Technology
      and integrating science technologies

These engaging programs for students have been organised and run in cooperation with the Flinders University Mentoring Programs which provides students with career information and workshops in the following areas

•  University Tours
•  Career Presentations
•  University  pathways

Workshops on
•  Chemistry
•  Nanotechnology,
•  Physics,
•  Biology
•  Genetics


Inspiring Speakers

Speakers from local industries and University academics from University of Adelaide and Flinders University are regularly invited to present at Middle and Senior School Assemblies. The main focus of their presentations is on the importance of learning Science and Mathematics. The guest speakers raise students’ awareness of the opportunities that exist in the areas of science and technology,  sharing their amazing life-stories and experiences in order to improve students’ motivation in learning.

Gifted and Talented Curriculum

The Gifted and Talented Students study an enriched curriculum in Maths and Science, have excursions to universities and local industry bodies, industry speakers’ and academics’ visits and experience a variety of Problem Based Learning Activities ranging from Nanotechnology exciting experiments and designs, individual projects in Engineering, Modelling and Robotics, to Maths Quizzes and Competitions. This course helps to develop students’ talent, enhance their learning in science, mathematics and technology areas, improve their persistence, independence, motivation and self-esteem.

Feedback from all the participants of the  Gifted and Talented Program is very positive and includes expressions of appreciation from both the students and the parents.

Challenging Projects Across the Curriculum

A range of stimulating and challenging projects were offered to classes and students across a wide range of the curriculum

Year 8 - Energy Efficient Housing Project

The design challenge in the project was to build a model house according to the given specifications, then conduct research and experiments to investigate what features could make it energy efficient. Students then investigated different situations using computer simulations Energy 2D and 3D. This was a chance for the students to apply their creative energies to an exciting and challenging task, experiment, work with their hands, build and have a good time.

Trade Physics and Senior Physics Students - Engineering Construction Projects
Bridge Building Project:
Students were engaged in the activities and computer simulations that allowed them to explore bridges throughout the world, types of bridges, the mathematics and physics of bridge building, how to construct a bridge and to make it stronger and more durable.   The 50-cm long wooden bridge-winner weighing 200 grams was able to hold a 40kg load!.

Trailer Construction Project:
The students’ task was to design a circuit for trailer lights, build a model trailer and wire it. Students used Crocodile Physics Computer Program to design the circuits with suitable switches:.

Radio Controlled Model Plane:
The student's task was to design, build and learn to fly a remote controlled model aeroplaneRed plane
To ensure a success of the testing flights, students used computer simulations to learn how to fly. Not an easy task.

The following are some of the  obstacles which the students had to consider and overcome in order to finish up with a piece of flying art, not a catastrophe!

•  Applying covering with too much
   or too little heat
    A mistake leads to inability of the
    plane model to fly.
•  The Wrong Glues.
   If the wrong choice is made - a wing can come apart in the air.
•  Centre of gravity.
   If the plane model is not balanced properly, the first flight can be a crash.
