Junior School

Years R-3

There are few formal expectations of students at this level. Home activities largely revolve around sharing with their parents the learning experiences of the day, reading with their parents or practising spelling or maths activities.

Years 4-5

At this level homework tasks may be set on a more regular basis. Any homework set will be written up in the student’s planner. Although we encourage enthusiasm and interest we also expect students and parents to balance family, social and sporting interests with the demands of school work.The following chart gives an indication of the maximum amount of time a child may be required to spend on homework on any given night/week under normal circumstances:

Middle School

Homework in the Middle School serves a number of purposes:
•  It assists in the consolidation of learning undertaken during lessons
•  It encourages the development of time planning skills
•  It encourages the development of independent learning
•  It gives parents the opportunity to be involved in their child’s learning
•  It gradually prepares students for senior secondary education where homework is essential for effective learning and
   academic achievement.

Allocation Guidelines

In general terms the guidelines below are followed in the setting of homework:
•  Yr 6/7: Maximum of 35 minutes homework from Monday to Thursday nights.
•  Yr 8: Maximum of 60 minutes of homework on any school night.
•  Yr 9: Maximum of 90 minutes of homework on any school night.

Students are responsible for entering all homework tasks in their diaries. Years 6/7/8 have a weekly homework schedule with specific subjects set on particular nights. Year 9 students have homework set by subject teachers of the day.

Senior School

The following principles and expectations apply to homework in the Senior School
•   Homework is simply an extension of schoolwork in that it is work completed at home rather than at school.
•   Homework is essential for effective learning and academic achievement.
•   Senior School teaching programs are developed on the understanding that significant and appropriate amounts of work will be completed out of
     school time.
•   Homework cannot compensate for inadequate effort in class.
•   It is always seen as an addition to appropriate levels of productivity at school.
•   Students in Years 11 and 12 may have study time allocated during the school day. This will not negate the need for regular work at home.

Allocation Guidelines

As a general rule, students in Year 10 can expect to have up to 90 minutes homework each school night, and Year 11 students up to 120 minutes each school night. Homework is generally set by the teacher of each subject undertaken on any day.

Year 12 students are expected to manage their time at school and at home to ensure that all assignments and set work are completed by the due date, and that an appropriate amount of revision is undertaken. Year 12 students should expect to do at least 120 minutes work at home each school night.

Information about recording Homework and about the Deadlines and Extensions Policy is included in the Senior School Planner which is issued to each Senior School student.


Middle School

Each student from Years 6-9 will be provided with a school planner to assist with organisation of school work and homework. It is expected that all students will keep their planners as a major communication link between school and home. Students need to have their planners with them in all lessons.

Details of planner use are carefully explained by teachers including entering all homework set, parental checks and neat, well organised presentation.

Senior School

Each Senior School student will be issued with a Planner that has been specifically designed to suit the needs of our students. It will contain details of matters that students may need to refer to from time to time. These include:
•   School expectations of students
•   School policies and procedures
•   Relevant curriculum guidelines
•  Timetable and calendar proformas 
The Planner is also used as the main form of communication, at a personal level, between the school and parents. Students are expected to have their Planner with them at all times, it is to be accessible to all teachers, and should be signed by parents of Yr. 10 and 11 students at the end of each week. Year 12 students will be expected to accept responsibility for their Planner without the need for regular checks.

The major function of the Planner, however, is to assist students with the organisation of their schoolwork and homework. This is best done by following these procedures:
•   As soon as Homework is set, enter the details in the Planner. In the unlikely event of no Homework being set, students should undertake some revision
    which should be an on-going aspect of Senior School studies.
•   Deadlines for all assignments should be clearly entered and should include intermediate deadlines for extended assignments.
•   Results and feedback for any work marked should also be recorded.
•   The Planner should be used to help organise what work should be done each week.

 Students must also recognise that it is a School Planner. It is not appropriate for it to be used as a social planner nor should it be allowed to be used for graffiti or other inappropriate decorations. The Planner should at all times reflect a positive, organised and productive attitude to school work.
